Village head tussle: 3 killed, 18 houses burnt in C’ River community
From JUDEX OKORO, Calabar
Three persons have been reportedly killed and 18 houses burnt over the struggle for the village headship of Ofodua-Adun community in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Besides, over 30 persons were said to have sustained injuries with their property destroyed just as farm lands and crops worth hundreds of thousands of naira were destroyed.
Daily Sun checks revealed that the two communities of Iva Egbe and Iva Egba of Ofodua Adun had been locked in a succession battle in the last three decades leading to alleged incessant attacks on Iva Egbe by Iva Egba natives.
While the Iva Egbe paternal royal family among the other four traditional families claimed to be vested with the exclusive right to produce the village head, the Iva Egba and three communities of Iva Enang, Iva Obeten and Iva Awonokwe , were insisting on rotation of the Ofodua traditional political organization.
This development had pitched the warring communities against each other as well as sowing seed of discord and disharmony between the hitherto two communities.
It was learnt that the battle over who would take over the traditional stool got to a climax penultimate month when the Iva Egba, Iva Enang, Iva Obeten and Iva Awonokwe communities allegedly invaded the farm lands of the Iva Egbe family members, destroyed their crops and attacked the people physically.
The invaders later moved from the farm land to the village and attacked Egbe family members killing three in the process and pulled down over 18 houses just as over 30 persons were wounded.
In a petition addressed to the state police commissioner and made available to Daily Sun, Iva Egbe traditional leaders decried the incessant attacks on their families because they had refused to let go their traditional inheritance.
In the petition dated December 6, 2013 and signed by Ovarr Ignatius Egba, Felix Abeng and Patrick Abeng Egbe, the community said the latest attack was an ethnic cleansing sort of and wanted government to intervene in the crisis.
Speaking on the crisis, one of the youth leaders, Sunday Attan, said: “We have suffered in the last three years in the hands of our brothers from Iva Egba because of village head. Look at me now; I have lost everything I laboured for years to build. What are we struggling for and for how much?”
When Daily Sun visited the state police command at Diamond Hill, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey, was not around for comment, but an officer in his office, said: “It is true that Ofodua community in Obubra local government has reported to us and the command is still investigating

Parents of deceased marine Brian LaLoup sue Greeks

An undated photo of Marine Sgt Brian LaLoup Marine Sgt Brian LaLoup is believed to have killed himself at the American embassy in Athens
The parents of a dead US Marine whose body was returned from Greece missing its heart are suing the US Department of Defense and the Greek government.
Craig and Beverly LaLoup say they experienced emotional distress when Sgt Brian LaLoup was "illegally autopsied" overseas.
Sgt LaLoup is believed to have killed himself at the US embassy in Athens in August 2012.
The Greek embassy in Washington said his heart was removed for testing.
According to the complaint filed in federal court in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Sgt LaLoup, 21, attended a party at the US embassy in Athens on 12 August 2012 and told a fellow marine he was contemplating taking his own life.
His comments were later reported to a supervisor who, the LaLoups claim, offered Sgt LaLoup drinks instead of offering proper medical treatment under military protocol.
Wrong heart sent Once intoxicated, Sgt LaLoup was allowed access to the embassy's weapons room, where he shot himself in the head, the parents say.
His body was transported to a local hospital and left unattended, where it underwent a post-mortem and his heart was removed by Greek medical staff, the complaint alleges.
The heart was later found to be missing during a second autopsy by US military officials in Dover, Delaware, on 22 August 2012, the complaint adds.
The LaLoups say they were not informed their son's heart was missing until two weeks after he was buried in the US.
They also say they were later given a heart that was not his.
"This is his heart. This is his soul. This is what made Brian who he is," Ms LaLoup told the Associated Press news agency.
The LaLoup family is seeking damages for emotional distress, rather than wrongful death for which the US government is typically immune.
A spokesman for the Greek embassy in Washington DC said Sgt LaLoup's heart was withheld for toxicology tests, the AP reported.

ASUU calls off five-month-old strike
•NLC brokers peace between FG, lecturers
From KEMI YESUFU, Abuja
A silver lining yesterday emerged in the five-month-old face-off between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) intervened with both parties signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The lecturers went on strike on July 2 this year over conditions in the universities, among other issues.
The NLC negotiation team led by its President, Abdulwahed Omar supervised the signing of the MoU which detailed modalities for the distribution of the N200 billion deposited by the Federal Government into an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN.
The deal also included the non -victimisation clause and payment of the lecturers’ salaries.
However, ASUU failed to announce the suspension of the strike. Its president, Dr. Nasir Fagge, said the signed document would be presented for further deliberation at their National Executive Council (NEC) meeting which will be convened this week.
The Supervising Minister for Education, Nyesom Wike, while reading out the MoU terms, said, “let me say clearly that today is not just historic, it is one of the happiest days of my life since I became the Minister of Education.
“As you are all aware ASUU had been on strike for well over five months on account of their resolve to bring about a new lease of life to all public universities, following Mr President’s personal intervention with the marathon meeting we held on November 4, 2013.
“With the executive of ASUU and other labour union leaders where all residual issues were resolved, Nigerians from all walks of life had expressed optimism that the strike would soon be called off.
“Unfortunately and sadly too, this was not to be due to ASUU’s insistence that the Federal Government must take further practical steps to show good faith and commitment to the implementation of the agreement.
“As a responsible and responsive government, we have a duty to restore normalcy to our university system so that our children can resume classes and pursue their educational careers. Consequently, the vice chancellors of the federal universities were directed by the pro-chancellors to immediately re-open the universities for academic activities while the minor discrepancies are sorted out.
“Today, I am very pleased to announce that all contending issues between ASUU and the Federal Government have been resolved to the satisfaction of the parties.
“Let me emphasise that we recognise and appreciate ASUU’s patriotic role and commitment towards ensuring that our universities are well funded to the point that they shore up to their counterparts in other parts of the world.
“Thus, we are all partners in progress and there are no victor, no vanquished in the struggle of this nature for as long as our goals remain noble not actuated at parochial interest and targeted at moving our nation forward”, Mr. Wike said.
Responding, ASUU president expressed gratitude to all involved in brokering the truce. He said: “I really want to thank all of us that are gathered here for ensuring that we came this far, I think it’s important to first acknowledge the intervention of Mr President because he was the one that made it possible to ensure that we came this far.
“Honourable minister, if what we had agreed on at that 13 hours meeting had been judiciously documented and our members were convinced that it would be implemented, we wouldn’t have wasted this time because we have a lot of respect for the office of Mr President.
“Our members are intellectuals and it’s simply because over the years particularly since the signing of the 2009 Agreement, we have been pursing government to get that agreement implemented we only succeeded in getting implemented a portion of that agreement and here we are over four years, but I think it’s never too late.
“If we ever think that not placing high premium on our university education out of the doldrums, I want to assure all of us that we will be deceiving ourselves because other countries that are ahead have made sure that their universities are making cutting edge research” Dr. Fagge said.

DR Congo's Kabila 'signs deal with M23 in Kenya'

M23 rebels pictured in November 2012 The M23 was routed in a UN-backed offensive by government troops
The Democratic Republic of Congo's president has signed a peace deal with the M23 rebel movement his forces defeated last month, Kenya's presidential spokesman says.
The accord was signed by President Joseph Kabila in the presence of regional leaders in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, Manoah Esipisu said.
Last month, the government refused to sign a deal brokered by Uganda.
At least 800,000 people fled their homes during the conflict.
The M23 took up arms in eastern DR Congo in April 2012, accusing the government of marginalising the ethnic Tutsi minority and failing to honour previous peace accords.
It was defeated last month following a major offensive by government and United Nations (UN) forces.
The UN has more than 19,000 troops in DR Congo, with an attack force given the mandate of neutralising armed groups.
Mr Esipisu said on his Twitter account that the signing ceremony at State House in Nairobi was witnessed by several regional leaders attending celebrations to mark 50 years of Kenya's independence.
They included Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni and Malawi's President Joyce Banda, he said.
Mr Esipisu did not give details of the agreement or who signed it on behalf of the M23.
On 12 November the government refused to sign a deal with the M23 in Uganda's capital, Kampala.
It said it had a problem with the title of the Ugandan-mediated document, not its contents.
The document should be called a declaration not an accord as that gave too much credibility to the rebels, the government said at the time.
Eastern DR Congo has been wracked by conflict since 1994, when Hutu militias fled across the border from Rwanda after carrying out a genocide against Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
According the charity Oxfam, there are currently more than 30 other groups are operating in the east.

French care worker held over deaths of six pensioners

A care worker at a home for the elderly in Chambery in the French Alps has been arrested on suspicion of poisoning six pensioners to death.
She admitted having wanted to relieve their suffering but denied that she had sought to kill them, a police source told French media.
The six pensioners all died in the space of two months.
When a woman of 84 died last month, an autopsy uncovered suspicious traces of drugs, France Info radio reports.

An examination was carried out because the woman at the Jacob-Bellecombette home near Chambery had suddenly fallen into a coma on 27 November, dying two days later.
An analysis found she had an overdose of non-prescribed medication.
The suspect, who is in her thirties, "admits she wanted to relieve the suffering of six people", the police source said.
She reportedly admitted giving a "cocktail of medication" to six people who were "mostly" "elderly if not very elderly" and who suffered from "chronic illnesses".
She is due to appear before a judge on Thursday to learn what, if any, charges she will face in connection with the deaths, AFP news agency reports.
Earlier in the week, a source close to the inquiry told French radio that aside from the death of the 84-year-old woman, investigators were looking into several other "troubling" circumstances at the home, the BBC's Christian Fraser reports from Paris.
The management did not comment formally on the case but one source told the media it was of "real seriousness."

Bangladesh Islamist Abdul Kader Mullah hanged for war crimes

Abdul Kader Mullah - File photo from February 2013 Abdul Kader Mullah denied all the charges against him
Bangladesh has executed the Islamist leader Abdul Kader Mullah, convicted of atrocities in the 1971 war of independence with Pakistan.
He is the first person convicted by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to be executed.
The ICT was set up in 2010 to investigate abuses committed during the 1971 conflict, in which some estimate three million people were killed.
Mullah was a senior leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party.
His trial earlier in the year sparked protests from Jamaat supporters.
Several other leading figures in the party have also been convicted by the tribunal.
Mullah had been scheduled to be hanged on Tuesday, before gaining a reprieve pending a last-minute appeal against his death sentence.
Bangladeshi activists shout slogans as they participate in a torch rally in Dhaka, Bangladesh (Dec. 12, 2013) Some Bangladeshis took to the streets on Thursday demanding Mullah's immediate execution
The Bangladeshi Supreme Court dismissed the appeal earlier on Thursday.
The 65-year-old was hanged inside Dhaka central jail at 22:01 local time (16:01 GMT) on Thursday evening.
The BBC's Mahfuz Sadique in Dhaka says security has been tightened in the capital and around the country, and there are reports from various towns of sporadic clashes between Jamaat-e-Islami supporters and security forces.
Those being tried by the ICT are accused of collaborating with Pakistani forces who attempted to stop East Pakistan, as Bangladesh was then, from becoming an independent country.
However, human rights groups have claimed that the tribunal falls short of international standards.

First Australian gay weddings held in capital city

Dozens of same-sex couples from all around the country are taking advantage of the Australia Capital Territory's new law allowing same-sex marriages. CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Gay and lesbian couples from around Australia joined in fragile marriages in Canberra on Saturday under the nation's beleaguered same-sex union laws that face a challenge in the courts within a week.

The hastily-arranged ceremonies held under blue summer skies were bitter-sweet occasions for some couples who realize the High Court could annul their unions on Thursday.
The federal government has challenged the validity of the Australian Capital Territory's fledgling law that had made gay marriage legal in Canberra and its surrounds from Saturday.
Bills to change federal law to allow gay marriage were twice rejected by Parliament last year, and Prime Minister Tony Abbott was elected in September on a platform of opposing marriage equality.
Some marriage equality advocates feared that the High Court would block same-sex wedding from Tuesday when it heard the challenge. But no orders were made to impede weekend ceremonies.
If the law survives the High court challenge next week, the Federal Parliament could then overturn it with legislation that would ignite a divisive and bitter debate about human and state rights.
Rodney Croome, national director of the advocacy group Australian Marriage Equality, said 25 same-sex couples had reported planning to marry in Canberra this weekend, including his deputy director, Ivan Hinton.
The actual figure could be higher.
"This is the first time that we have been able to demonstrate that the sky will not cave in" due to gay couples marrying in Australia, a tearful Hinton said at his wedding to his Malaysian-born husband Chris Teoh.
Gays and lesbians who married on grassy spaces against the backdrops of Canberra's many symbols of democracy on Saturday said they would be deeply disappointed if the laws failed at the first hurdle next week.
But several said their potentially short-lived unions would remain achievements toward marriage equality.
"Regardless of what happens on Thursday, we still get five days of legally being together," said Stacey Cowan, as she posed for photographs outside Australia's original Parliament House with her new wife, Corrina Peck.
The couple traveled more than 400 kilometers (250 miles) from their coastal home town of Blue Haven for the occasion.
Canberra resident Hayley Wilson said she was glad she did not have to go back to her homeland, New Zealand, to legally marry her Australian wife Samantha Hermes.
"The ball's definitely rolling now and hopefully it builds momentum whatever happens next week," Hermes said.
The Australian Christian Lobby, a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage, warned that the public debate should focus on the plight of children in same-sex relationships.
The group's spokesman Lyle Shelton said same-sex marriage equated to children being removed from a biological parent.
"We hear about equal love all the time but we don't hear about what it means for children," Shelton told Sky News television.
Gay marriage has legal recognition in 18 countries as well as 16 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia

The Chang'e 3 lunar lander and moon rover is part of the second phase of China's three-step robotic …
Less than five days after leaving Earth atop a blazing Long March launcher, China's Chang'e 3 spacecraft reached lunar orbit Friday to prepare for an historic rocket-assisted touchdown in the moon's Bay of Rainbows later this month.

Outfitted with a six-wheeled robotic rover and smarts to avoid hazards in the landing zone, Chang'e 3 is China's boldest unmanned space mission to date, extending feats achieved by a pair of lunar orbiters launched in 2007 and 2010.
The four-legged lander fired its propulsion system for six minutes and braked into orbit around the moon at 0953 GMT (4:53 a.m. EST) Friday, according to China's state-run Xinhua news agency. [How China's Chang'e 3 Moon Rover Works (Infographic)]
The craft lifted off Dec. 1 on a Long March 3B rocket, which put the probe on a direct four-and-a-half day trajectory from Earth to the moon.

The spacecraft is now flying 100 kilometers, or about 60 miles, above the moon, Xinhua reported.
After lowering its altitude later this week, Chang'e 3 will fire a variable-thrust main engine to make a soft landing in the Bay of Rainbows, a dark lava plain on the upper-left quadrant of the moon's near side.
The lander has terrain recognition sensors to feed information into the probe's guidance computer, ensuring the spacecraft does not come down on a steep slope or in a boulder field.
A few feet above the moon, the lander will autonomously cut off its engine and drop to the surface. Engineers fastened shock absorbers to the landing legs to cushion the impact.
China has not disclosed the time of the landing, but European Space Agency officials supporting the mission with communications and tracking antennas say the touchdown is scheduled for some time Dec. 14.
Named Yutu or "jade rabbit," the mission's rover will drive off the landing platform a few hours later, according to ESA officials.
The rover has a mass of 140 kilograms, or about 308 pounds, and carries radioisotope heater units to keep the spacecraft warm during the two week-long lunar nights. The heaters are likely powered by small quantities of plutonium-238, the isotope of plutonium preferred for space missions, according to respected space researcher Dwayne Day, who discussed the rover's heaters in a story published in the Space Review.
The Yutu rover carries advanced radars to study the structure of the lunar crust at shallow depths along its path, and it is outfitted with spectrometers to detect the elements making up the moon's soil and rocks, said Pei Zhaoyu, a spokesperson for the Chang'e 3 mission, in a report by Xinhua.
Four navigation and panoramic cameras are mounted on the rover to return high-resolution images from the moon.
The mission also has an optical telescope for astronomical observations from the lunar surface, according to Pei.
China's lunar program is focused on robotic missions for now, with plans for an unmanned mission to return rock samples to Earth by 2020. China's military-run human space program is focused on development of a space station in Earth orbit around the same timeframe, but scientists have studied a manned lunar mission in the next decade.
Chang'e 3 will be China's first mission to test the technologies required for future lunar surface exploration.

10 Signs Your Man Is A Psychopath

Written by Kiri Blakeley on CafeMom’s blog, The Stir .
Are you in a relationship with a psychopath? You might think that's something you'd know right away by the red tint of evil in the person's eyes, the swastika tat on the forehead, or the insistence on discussing serial killers over dinner. But nope! Psychopaths can be extremely charming and come across like Prince Charming at first. So unless you know the signs, you'd probably get sucked into the life of a psychopath and not know who he or she really was until you are completely sucker punched. Here are 10 signs you should look out for to quickly identify a psychopath.
1. Flattery like you've never heard before. Psychopaths move extremely quickly. On the first date, he'll probably tell you that you are stunningly beautiful, unbelievably intelligent, and uproariously witty. He will play into every fantasy and insecurity you have. If you think you're fat, he will tell you how much he loves your body. If you think you're shy, he will laugh at every lame attempt at a joke and tell you you should have been a comedian. This is called "love bombing." It's the idealization phase he gets you hooked on, and it's the phase you will spend the next however-many months or years trying to get back once he abruptly shuts it off.
2. He is just like you. Psychopaths will try to convince you that you are soul mates, just alike. He loves all the things you love and you have all of the same interests. If you had a tough childhood, he will say something like, "We both had it rough. That's why we understand each other." If there's an obscure book you love, he will make sure he loves it too. What he's doing is called "mirroring." He has no real identity, so he sucks yours up and mirrors it back to you.
3. Pity plays. Pay careful attention to what a psychopath says on the first few dates about his exes and other people in his life. Is his ex girlfriend crazy and stalking him? Did another girlfriend rob him blind? Is his mother controlling and horrible? Does he seem like he's had a tough time with people, who always use and abandon him? Whatever he says about the other people in his life is pretty much exactly what he'll be saying about you at some point, so listen carefully.
4. Illnesses and injuries. Psychopaths absolutely love pity, so pay attention to how many illnesses and injuries he's had. Did he miraculously beat cancer but it could come back at any minute? Does he break his foot on your second date and has to cancel? (But strangely is okay for the third date?) Did he lose his first wife in a car accident that left him with brain trauma (yet he talks fine and seems fine)? Try to check out his stories -- call hospitals if you need to -- but don't be surprised if he has an excuse for why you can't find any record of any of his traumas.
5. Great sex. Everyone wants great sex, but those who have been with a psychopath often say it's the best thing they've ever experienced. A psychopath goes out of his way to please you. It's just another way of getting you hooked. Once he has you hooked, you'll find yourself begging for sex because he suddenly won't want it anymore.
6. Cracks in the mask. A psychopath will sometimes blurt out something odd about himself, apropos of nothing. Like you might be cooking dinner and suddenly he blurts, "I'm crazy you know." Or "I'm cheating on you." He will then either deny he said it or play it off as a joke. A form of keeping you off balance -- but also possibly an unconscious slip of the mask of his persona.
7. Silent treatment. Once psychopaths have you hooked after the "love bombing" and "idealization" phase, they then begin to devalue you. The first step in that is usually to give you the silent treatment over something. Psychopaths are also known to disappear for days at a time. Be sure, the silent treatment and disappearing act will be laid squarely at your feet. In reality, he is off sizing up his next target somewhere.
8. Triangulation. Psychopaths love to work you up into a state of obsessive frenzy, so to do that, they idealize you, give you fabulous sex, and then begin pulling away and "triangulating." This is when they introduce other people into the mix to make you jealous. It could be an ex-wife or ex-girlfriend, a friend of the same sex, or even a celebrity. In the psychopaths mind, everyone else wants him, so you better be on your best behavior, or he will move on to one of his adoring fans.
9. Discard. The final phase of the psychopath is the "discard" phase. After he sucks you in with idealization, then begins to devalue you, he will suddenly discard you as if you never had a relationship. You are suddenly completely worthless to him. He will usually move on to another target at this point.
10. "Hoovering." Although a psychopath will discard you, he doesn't quite want you moving on either. If he senses you are done with him, he will suddenly do an about-face, and begin bombarding you with pleas to stay together. He will try to "Hoover" (named after the vacuum cleaning company) you back in by saying everything you've ever wanted to hear, making a million promises, and suddenly being on his absolute best behavior. It's all an act so he can get you back into the fold.
The only way to get rid of a psychopath is to completely go no contact. It's the only thing that doesn't fuel his games and ego. He will make that difficult for you -- some psychopaths will stalk you, most will Hoover. But to engage him in any way, even just to tell him off, only leaves you open to more mind games, which he will win, because he has no feelings. (Those who have children with psychopaths must develop low contact, and keep in touch only as much as absolutely needed as regards the children.)
Of course, nobody is perfect, and some people are just immature and go through periods of giving the silent treatment, or "devaluing" you with critical comments. Other people may triangulate to create jealousy because they're insecure or bored or don't even quite realize they're doing it. There are also plenty of garden-variety jerks out there who will engage in a lot of "psychopathic" behavior without being clinical psychopaths. But if your lover engages in much or all of this behavior, then he or she is likely psychopathic, and you should run for the hills!
Have you ever been with a psychopath?

My twin snatched my boyfriend

couple argue
Maryjane and Annette were two peas in a pod. The twins were identical in every way. Aside from their mother, it was very difficult for other people, including friends, to identify one from the other.
Maryjane and Annette took advantage of this feature and got away with numerous pranks.  Their mother, Arden,  had enrolled them in the same secondary school but an incident made her separate them. One day, Annette was caught when she tried to impersonate and write an impromptu test for Maryjane! Her sister had broken the hostel rules and gone for a friend’s birthday party in a neighbouring city. Unknown to her, the mathematics teacher organised an impromptu test at the end of the class.   When she got wind of the test, Annette quickly sneaked into the class when she taught the teacher was not watching. At the end of the exercise, the teacher informed her that he was aware of what she had done.
The matter was brought to the notice of the principal, who immediately summoned their mother.  The principal threatened to expel Annette and gave their mother an ultimatum— she either withdrew Annette from the school or have the twins expelled. As a result, the girls were separated from each other for the first time since birth.
Maryjane could not face being separated from Annette. She wept bitterly and fell ill. Annette assured her that they would always visit each other in school. Their mother ensured that Annette was enrolled in a nearby school.
The incident sobered Maryjane and she became more serious with her studies. She never played pranks in school again.  Her sister visited her whenever she had time between classes and they hung out at the school cafeteria together. At the end of the school year, Maryjane emerged top of her class. Annette also took top position in her class.
That year, their mother took them on a summer vacation abroad.   Although she had raised them as a single mother, Arden took great pride in the way her twins turned out. She was not ashamed of the fact that they were a product of a casual fling with a visiting diplomat from the Caribbean Island.
The man, Peter Thompson, was married and Elizabeth did not think it would be proper to break another woman’s home since he only spent one month in Nigeria on official duty.
When the children sought to know about their father, she came up with this explanation: “Your father was a visiting sailor. Unfortunately, by the time you were born, I lost touch with him.’’ Since then, however, Maryjane and Annette had secretly tried to locate their father. They gathered data, asked questions and looked up every Peter Thompson in phone books and other records. Their mother had no idea that they were looking for their father.
One day, they were able to locate a man by that name on the yellow pages but the man was listed as a diplomat from the Caribbean Island and not a sailor as their mother made them to believe. They eventually gave up the search and continued with their lives.
Arden worked in an advertising and public relations agency. As one of the top managers, she was entitled to a lot of privileges including foreign trips once a year. The company also made provision for scholarship scheme for children of senior staff. After their secondary education, Maryjane and Annette were placed on the company’s list of beneficiaries. Both had wanted to study law but their mother kicked against the idea. “Both of you cannot be in the same discipline. You have to be separated at a certain point in your life, no matter how dreadful that sounds.  That is the only way you can grow up as independent women,’’ she advised them.
So, while Maryjane chose medicine, Annette settled for law in different universities.
“One thing I would not have you do is board the same flight home whenever you are on holidays. When we travel out of the country we can afford to board the same flight. When you are on vacation, don’t wait for each other.  I am not saying something bad would happen but it is better to take precautions,” their mother also advised.
But the two tried as much as possible to stay close. They went to each other’s school whenever they could get away.  In her third year in school, Annette met and fell in love with George, a 400 level medical student.  George was from the Niger Delta region and his family was very influential. He was head over heels in love with Annette and always said he could not wait for the semester to end in order to take her home and introduce her to his parents.
The semester finally ended and Annette and George started making preparations to travel to Delta State to visit his parents. George knew Annette had a twin sister but he had not met her. Each time Maryjane came around, George was either busy or out of campus.
Annette had insisted, however, that for the trip to Delta State, Maryjane would have to accompany them. George was excited at the prospect. He would finally get to meet Annette’s twin. They fixed the trip for the Christmas holidays.
Arden knew about the whole arrangement because her daughter had told her so much about the young man. She had also spoken to him several times on phone and he sounded like a responsible man. She was the one who suggested that Maryjane accompany her sister to Delta State. The idea was for them to look after each other.
They travelled a week after their semester exams and Maryjane came to school to join them. George saw her for the first time and to him the resemblance was uncanny. “I would never be able to tell them apart in a million years,” he told himself.
They boarded the morning flight and in 30 minutes, they arrived in Delta State. The parents and relations of George were awed by the twins and could not stop fussing over them.
Maryjane and Annette spent three days in Delta State. They were to spend one week and then leave for Lagos to see their mother. But things went horribly wrong.

Bride escapes death after wedding

Scene of the the accident
A bride narrowly escaped death in an auto crash while on her way from her wedding. The accident involving a NNPC  tanker with number plate XG 321 MKA, a cargo truck and two saloon cars happened at about 4: 45pm on Saturday, close to the Otedola bridge, Alausa, on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.
Our reporter who witnessed the accident said the NNPC truck, while descending the slop from Alausa at top speed, could not hold its break. It then ran into the first car and squashed the second one against the cargo truck.
The bride and her husband were said to have jumped out of their car.
When our reporter got to the scene of the accident, the groom was no where in sight. The groom’s elder sister who spoke to our repoter while cuddling her baby explained that they were just coming from the wedding reception of the couple.
She was seen kneeling down and thanking God for their escape but refused to give the name of the couple.
The fire coming out of the truck was put out by sympathisers as the tanker was carrying petroleum product. The accident also resulted in  gridlock which was controlled by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded the north in response to a military coup on the island which was backed by the Athens government.
In 1974 the island was effectively partitioned with the northern third inhabited by Turkish Cypriots and the southern two-thirds by Greek Cypriots. The UN peacekeeping forces estimate that 165,000 Greek Cypriots fled or were expelled from the north, and 45,000 Turkish Cypriots from the south, although the parties to the conflict say the figures are higher.
The UN Buffer Zone, commonly called the "Green Line", dividing the two parts from Morphou through Nicosia to Famagusta, is patrolled by United Nations troops.
The UN drew up the Green Line as a ceasefire demarcation line in 1963 after intervening to end communal tension. It became impassable after the Turkish invasion of 1974, except for designated crossing points.

North declares independence
In 1983 the Turkish-held area declared itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The status of Northern Cyprus as a separate entity is recognised only by Turkey, which keeps around 30,000 troops in the north of the island.
The prospect of EU enlargement concentrated minds in the search for a settlement. UN-sponsored negotiations continued throughout 2002 and a peace plan was tabled. Soon afterwards the EU invited Cyprus to become a member.
But hopes that the island could join united were dashed when leaders of the Turkish and Greek communities failed to agree to the UN plan by the March 2003 deadline.
In the months that followed travel restrictions were eased, enabling people to cross the border for the first time in nearly 30 years. But hopes of larger progress continued to be disappointed.
Hopes on hold
A revised UN reunification plan was put to both communities in April 2004. Turkish Cypriots endorsed the plan but Greek Cypriots overwhelmingly rejected it, and so the island remained divided as it joined the EU in May.
Hopes rose again briefly after the election of leftwing Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, who agreed to talks on reunification with the new Communist president of Cyprus, Demetris Christophas, in 2008. The victory of nationalists at parliamentary and later presidential elections in the north over the following two years brought talks to an end.
After independence from Britain in 1960, Cyprus successfully diversified its largely agrarian economy into one based on services - including a large tourism sector - and light manufacturing. More recently it has also developed into an important financial hub, especially for investors from Russia and Eastern Europe.
But in 2012, Cyprus' economy was badly hit by its extensive exposure to recession-hit economy of Greece, and the country was forced to seek emergency help from international lenders.

Cage aux Folles film director Edouard Molinaro dies

Edouard Molinaro (file image from 6 September 2008, in Deauvil) Molinaro was praised by the French president for a 'rich and varied' career
Edouard Molinaro, who directed classic French farce La Cage aux Folles and other much-loved films, has died in Paris at the age of 85.
After starting out in crime films, he switched to comedies, notably starring the actor Louis de Funes.
La Cage (1978), about a gay couple's hilariously ill-starred attempt to pass themselves off as straight, was remade in the US as The Birdcage (1996).
French President Francois Hollande paid tribute to Molinaro's popular appeal.
"Edouard Molinaro possessed the talent for attracting a broad public to quality films," a statement from the Elysee Palace said.
"This film-maker, who had a rich and varied career, directed the greatest actors of French cinema while winning over the public, and winning the admiration of his peers, at the same time."
Among Molinaro's numerous other films were Oscar (1967) with de Funes and My Uncle Benjamin (1969), which starred the Belgian singer and songwriter Jacques Brel.
He was nominated for an Oscar for the 1978 farce.
In recent years, Molinaro worked on made-for-television films and directing episodes of popular French TV series.
He died in hospital of lung failure.

US war veteran Merrill Newman home after N Korea ordeal

Merrill Newman smiles after being reunited with his wife, Alicia, at San Francisco International Airport. His family say he is the victim of a mistaken identity
US veteran of the Korean War Merrill Newman has arrived in San Francisco after being released by North Korea.
North Korea's state news agency said Mr Newman was expelled on "humanitarian grounds" after confessing to "crimes" in the 1950-53 war and "apologising".
He had been held since October on charges of "hostile acts" against the North, while visiting as a tourist.
Although Mr Newman, 85, did serve during the Korean War, his family says he is the victim of mistaken identity.
The US welcomed Pyongyang's decision.
"We are pleased that Mr Merrill Newman has been allowed to depart the DPRK (North Korea) and re-join his family. We welcome the DPRK's decision to release him," said state department spokeswoman Marie Harf.
A four-page document titled "Apology" with the name of US citizen Merrill E. Newman and dated 9 November 2013 is seen in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang on 30 November 2013 "Please forgive me," Mr Newman asked in a four-page statement, titled "Apology"
"I'm delighted to be home," Mr Newman said in San Francisco. "It's been a great homecoming. I'm tired, but ready to be with my family."
He thanked the Swedish embassy in Pyongyang and US embassy in Beijing for helping to secure his release.
'Forgive me' Mr Newman - a pensioner from Palo Alto, California - had been held in North Korea since being taken off a plane as he prepared to leave the country on 26 October, following a 10-day tourist visit.
"It is something of a surprise that he was released so quickly" says BBC correspondent Lucy Williamson
In a video released by North Korean authorities last week, Mr Newman was shown reading his alleged apology, dated 9 November.
It claims he was an "adviser of the Kuwol Unit of the UN Korea 6th Partisan Regiment part of the Intelligence Bureau of the Far East Command" - an apparent reference to one of the special operations units acting against the North.
Vice-President Biden: "It's a positive thing they've done but... [Kenneth Bae] should be released immediately"
Mr Newman allegedly confessed to trying to contact surviving soldiers during his trip as a tourist.
The statement added: "Please forgive me."
But Mr Newman's family said there must have been "some dreadful misunderstanding".
Another veteran, also named Merrill Newman, was awarded a Silver Star medal for his efforts during the Korean War.
The North Korean authorities have previously been accused of coercing confessions from detainees.
US Vice-President Joe Biden, while welcoming North Korea's release of Mr Newman as "a positive thing", renewed calls for Pyongyang to free another American, Kenneth Bae, held since November 2012 and sentenced in May to 15 years' hard labour.
Pyongyang said Mr Bae - described as both a tour operator and Christian missionary - had used his tourism business to plot sedition.

Catholic Priest in trouble over illegal arms

on December 07, 2013

By Ikenna Anyanwu
Police authorities in Imo State are investigating a Roman Catholic priest (names withheld ) for unlawful possession of firearms. The priest, said to be in-charge of one of the prominent Parishes in Dikenafai, Ideato South Local Government area, Imo State, was arrested for allegedly being in possession of three unlicensed guns with which he threatened the lives of his parishioners.
ARMS
Crime Guard reliably gathered that  the guns which include one pump action riffle, one double- barrelled gun and a locally -made pistol allegedly belonging to the priest were recovered from his official residence by operatives of Special Armed Robbery Squad, SARS,  Imo State Police Command acting on a tip off from concerned parishioners.

Described as a very controversial priest, the reverend father was arrested and detained briefly but granted bail by the police following the intervention of some influential religious and political leaders in the state.

Police sources intimated that the controversy surrounding the catholic priest stemmed from a tragedy that occurred in January 2010 , after the death of a prominent indigene of the area.   The resident priest was said to had raised issues over the burial ceremony which inflamed the natives and they had to lodge formal complaints to the Bishop of the area over the way the priest was allegedly calling people  names while conducting services.

According to the source, the matter became worse after armed robbers reportedly attacked the priest in his official residence and he openly accused some prominent citizens of the area  of masterminding the robbery.

This, the source continued, made some of them to write a  petition to the Commissioner of Police in Imo State  accusing the priest of threatening their lives with dangerous weapons.   The Police boss swiftly acted on the petition and sent detectives from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, to the residence of the priest where some weapons were allegedly recovered.

Meanwhile, investigation into the case is ongoing by the police to ascertain the source of the guns and possibly the actual purposes they are being used for.    It is believed that the matter will be charged to court after full police investigation had been concluded.

It would be recalled that the police in Imo State under the present Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Katsina had in recent times made remarkable breakthrough in impounding illegal arms and ammunition used by criminal gangs in the state.   The latest arrest of a priest marks a new twist in the war against crime in the state, particularly the illegal use of firearms

Jay-Z tops 2014 Grammy nominations

Jay-Z tops 2014 Grammy nominations
on December 07, 2013
LOS ANGELES  - Veteran rapper Jay-Z topped nominees for the 2014 Grammys announced Friday with nine nods, while Taylor Swift and Daft Punk were also among those in the running in major categories.
But Jay-Z other major stars including Justin Timberlake failed to score any nominations in the major categories, which saw a mixture of rap and pop in the running for the top honors at music’s equivalent of the Oscars next month.
In second place with seven nods apiece were California hip hop star Kendrick Lamar and rapper Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, as well as Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams, while rapper Drake scored five.
The nominees in key categories were announced during an hour-long concert at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, including video-link performances by Swift from Australia and Katy Perry live from Canada.
Jay-Z
“This year’s nominations reflect the talented community of music makers who represent some of the highest levels of excellence and artistry of the year in their respective fields,” said Neil Portnow head of Grammys organizers The Recording Academy.
In the coveted Record of the Year category songstress Swift’s “Red” will compete with French electro duo Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories,” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s “The Heist,” Lamar’s “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City” and Sara Bareilles “The Blessed Unrest.”
Record Of The Year candidates are Daft Punk & Williams’ ubiquitous “Get Lucky,” New Zealand teenager Lorde’s “Royals,” “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons, Hawaiian crooner Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out Of Heaven” and Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” made infamous by Miley Cyrus’ twerking at the MTV Video Music Awards show.
Shortlisted for Song of the Year — for songwriters, as opposed to performers — were “Just Give Me A Reason” sung by Pink Featuring Nate Ruess; “Locked Out Of Heaven” sung by Bruno Mars; “Roar” sung by Katy Perry; “Royals” sung by Lorde, and “Same Love” sung by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis was also nominated for Best New Artist, up against James Blake, Kendrick Lamar, Kacey Musgraves and Ed Sheeran.
While big-hitters Jay-Z and Timberlake scored lots of nods, they were mostly in rap and pop/R &B categories respectively. Neither the rapper’s heavily marketed “Magna Carta .. Holy Grail,” nor Timberlake’s “The 20/20 Experience” made it onto the Best Album shortlist.
The 56th annual Grammys show — music’s version of the Oscars — will be held on January 26 at the Staples Center.
Whereas in previous years megastars like Britain’s Adele have been nominated in most of the key categories — and went on to a clean sweep of six Grammys last year — there appears little likelihood of an all-conquering act next month.
Industry journal Variety said Friday’s nominations made “for a wide-open race with no clear favorite and few megastars in the running for top honors at the music biz’s January kudofest.”
In fact Adele did secure one nomination Friday: in the Best Song for Visual Media category, for “Skyfall,” the theme tune to the last James Bond movie.
Other Britons shortlisted included veteran icon David Bowie, who won a Best Rock Album nod for “The Next Day,” his surprise first release in a decade in March, triggering ecstasy among older fans and arguably showing some younger stars how to do it.
