Gunmen believed to be Fulani herdsmen, went on rampage yesterday, killing more than 21 persons in a renewed attack on Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to a source, the gunmen came in a large number and attacked Kukek community in Bakin Kogi village.
He said that the gunmen also burnt down the house of a man identified as Tsok Gwom between 1a.m. and 2:00 a.m. in the night. The deaths of the head of the family, his wife, two other women, and five children; bring the total number of those killed to nine. The attackers thereafter, reportedly made away with some cattle belonging to the villagers,
Residents of the community said that gunshots alerted members of the vigilance group in the community who launched a reprisal attack on the gunmen and killed 12 of them.
A resident of the community who did not want his name in print also said that members of the vigilance group also sustained injuries in the attack.
When contacted, the Interim Administrator of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Habila Dung said, he received a distress call about the incident and immediately alerted the security. He however, said they had not got the details of the attack.
Also, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Felicia Anslem confirmed the incident but said she was not aware of the casualty figure.
